The global church is a family
The global church family is organized into smaller, local families (for example, see Revelation 1:4)
Each local family is to have leaders who watch over it (Hebrews 13:7, 17)
Despite what many in the world say, families have boundaries and limits. A dad, a mom, and their children. You can be a neighbor kid and enjoy hanging out with a particular family, but that doesn’t make you a member of that family. The children in a family experience care and oversight that the neighbor kids just don’t get.
In the church family, how do we practically distinguish between people who just attend an occasional service from those who desire intentional care and guidance from the pastors and elders?
Having a formal church membership process seems to be the best way to accomplish this in our cultural situation.
Membership says that you are not only committed but also submitted to a local church. So, the number 1 benefit is knowing that you’ve obeyed the Lord (Hebrews 13:7, 17).
As a member, you’ll be assigned to members of the leadership team, who will check in on you periodically to see what needs you might have. You will be able to serve in more positions in the church. You’ll also be able to vote on big church decisions.
